The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has affirmed that President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi will continue to respect the established procedure of electing a President every five years and urges all individuals with differing opinions to close this discussion.
This statement, released by the Presidential Communication Department, follows recent suggestions proposing that President Mwinyi should be granted an extended term of seven years instead of the five years stipulated in the Zanzibar Constitution.
“These opinions have even gone as far as suggesting that next year’s General Election to elect the President of Zanzibar should not take place. This idea is neither beneficial nor advantageous for our country and the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), which adheres to the principles of democracy,” the statement explained.
Furthermore, the Government of Zanzibar emphasized that President Mwinyi is a staunch believer in following the Constitution and the laws of the country. Therefore, these suggestions do not represent the views of President Mwinyi nor those of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi Zanzibar.
