The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to significantly increase the country’s oil storage capacity. Under the leadership of President H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan, this strategic initiative aims to ensure Tanzania maintains adequate oil reserves, shielding local consumers from the impact of global market fluctuations.
As part of the project, TPDC will renovate an existing tank and construct six new tanks with a combined capacity of 162,000 tonnes. These facilities will be strategically located in Kigamboni, Dodoma, and Mwanza. The tendering process for the construction project has already commenced, drawing interest from several companies. The entire project is expected to be completed within a minimum of twenty months due to its scale and complexity.
The refurbishment will begin with Tank No. 8, which has a storage capacity of 45,000 tonnes. This tank, located at the Tanzania International Petroleum Reserves (TIPER) in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, will undergo renovation starting June 2024.
President H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized the importance of enhancing Tanzania’s oil infrastructure to ensure national energy security. Baraka Nyakutonya, TPDC’s Oil Trade Manager, elaborated on the upcoming projects, stating that the tender process for the new tanks is underway, with site inspections completed by interested companies. Official tender announcements are scheduled for June 17, 2024, marking the next phase of the project.
These efforts underscore President H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to bolstering the country’s capacity to meet the needs of Tanzanian citizens and ensuring a stable oil supply.
